Dear writer,
Let me tell you about the darkest period of my life.
Years ago, I was living in Vietnam and working in an architecture firm in Ho Chi Minh City. Ever since I’d been a kid, I’d had two dreams in life:
I wanted to be an architect.
And I wanted to be an author.
I went into my architecture job with so much hope and excitement.
“What do you want me to start with?” I asked.
“Design these toilets,” they said.
Yep. I was literally designing toilets. Not exactly the most creatively exciting task.
I’d hoped it would get better. But it didn’t. I was given the most boring, soul-sucking jobs imaginable. Work was stressful, and meaningless.
My architecture dreams were crushed.
I fell into a dark place. Away from my friends and family, confined to a miserable job that had turned from dream to nightmare, I had only one solace:
My writing.
Every morning, I’d wake at 5am, before sunrise, to write my novel. As the sun rose, and the tropical heat smothered the bustling city, I’d continue to write, right up until the last possible moment before I needed to rush off to work. Afterwards, I’d huddle in a humid restaurant to continue with my writing.
When I finally returned to my hometown in Australia, my architecture dreams had crumbled to ash.
But from those ashes came a new dream.
See, I’d always been interested in writing. Ever since I was a kid, I’d loved reading, and I’d always daydreamed about one day getting a story published.
Up until then, however, writing had only ever been a hobby.
But when I was in my miserable architecture job in Vietnam, I realised how much fulfillment and joy writing was giving me.
And I also realised how miserable my life could become if I allowed soul-sucking jobs to crowd out my writing and fill my life with monotonous despair.
So I made a commitment to myself:
I would write a story that was good enough to be published, no matter what.
It was time to take my writing dreams seriously.
It was time to turn pro.
When I came back home, I embarked on a quest to become the best storyteller possible. I set off on a journey of learning how to create compelling characters, page-turning plots, awe-inspiring settings, rich themes, and — above all — a deep sense of emotional resonance that would make my stories linger in readers minds for the rest of their lives.
It would take years before I understood how to accomplish this.
But when I made the choice to turn pro and set off on this quest to master the craft of storytelling, I took back control of my life.
Fast forward to today, and I’ve published three fantasy novels, along with a bestselling fantasy video game.
My writing brings in enough money to let me only work three days a week at my day job (which is now in tech instead of architecture), and I’m able to write stories that are read by thousands of eager readers.
It’s taken me a lot of trial and error to finally understand the craft of storytelling. What do readers want? A great narrative that hooks them, complex and three-dimensional characters that intrigue them, and a sense that they’re stepping into another world – another person’s life. And that’s just the surface.
It all sounds simple enough, but it can be ridiculously hard to master.
Since I started on my journey, I’ve written over a million words. And if I knew then what I now know, I would have saved YEARS of painful trial and error.
In my Story Coaching program, we’ll take an in-depth look at your writing, structure, characters and more – so that we can figure out what’s working, and what we can change to help you unleash the stories of your dreams.
A few simple tweaks can be the difference between a story that collapses into a pile of rubble…or a novel that becomes loved by readers, and sets you on the path to living a life of creative freedom and fulfillment.
“You really helped me level up past a ceiling that I didn’t even know I was at, and helped me get a deeper understanding of my characters and the way my story needed to progress. I have learned more as a writer in the past two months than I did in two years trying to push myself alone.”
– Michael Johnson, Story Coaching client.
“I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my output. When we started this, I was still on about a thousand words a day. Now, I’m averaging 2000-2500 and that amount is increasing.”
– Thomas Clement, Story Coaching client.
“Before the course my writing was very one-dimensional and unorganised and I couldn’t really figure out what to do. After the course I came out feeling that my writing was multi-faceted, multi-layered, and my scenes were accomplishing several things at once instead of just one flat thing. I feel a lot more confident and organised after taking Jed’s course. It helped me a lot.”
